  1. Star Trek is one of the biggest franchises ever. I first came across it with The Next Generation series. So, when the blu ray of the original came out, I jumped on it. The blu ray presentation–in terms of quality of image and sound–is unparalleled for any series of its time. I was blown away that a series this old could look and sound this good. Now the actual material was a little more uneven than I expected. Some of it is brilliant (Menagerie, Balance of Terror, Court Martial), some of its good, but there is some that is bad, really bad (The Man Trap, Miri, Shore Leave). I watched in utter disbelief as Sulu pranced around in one episode swinging a sword! Yes, there are number of these horrible moments. Of course, there are moments of brilliance and episodes where you see the future potential of the series. Menagerie Parts 1 & 2 is one of those. Jeffrey Hunter is brilliant and the story is one of the best of all Star Trek. BTW, Kirk and Spock are really, really good episode after episode. There are a number of good guest performances and even some surprising ones (like Joan Collins). Overall, it’s ok, but not the best.

  2. When reading the security label across the top of the Slim Line box. I noticed it

read “The (Best) of the original series (Vol).3” The Best of, Vol. 3. I havent

purchased the set yet so I’m not sure. Is the the COMPLETE season 3. Don’t Like the

slim line box that doesnt match the first two sets at all. I’ll remember Paramount

how you cheapened things up at the end of this series when you market “THe Next Generation”

in Blu Ray and wait to buy the compete set or at least matching ones when you offer the last season.

  3. Once again I am displeased with a series that changes the packaging mid release. Since all three seasons of Star Trek were released in the same year it shouldn’t have been an issue here but it is. The season three box is a slimline Blu-ray case and doesn’t match the first two. Come on! Some fans want their sets to match up like they should. Is that too much to ask?

  4. So what? Well, admittedly I was frightened when I saw the top sticker label say “The Best of Star Trek Season 3” etcetera. Well that was clearly a mistake, because this is the ENTIRE Season 3 of The Original Series on Blu Ray.

And yes, the case is half as thick as the other two seasons’, but it holds all six discs of the entire set just fine.

I’m not reviewing the series here, because the episodes number in the dozens, likely of varying quality, and I have not seen them yet, and they can be meticulously picked apart in the likely hundreds of reviews on the DVD versions. But these are separated because they are Blu Ray—expected to be of superior picture quality.

Well this set does its best, and follows like the previous two seasons, complete with the option to switch back and forth between the original episode’s effects, and the Remastered versions that came out a few years ago. It also has a bunch of spiffy special effects, and the whole episode “The Cage”, both remastered and spiffed up, and the TV version released in 1980 or so with the half-black and white. And it has an alternate version of “Where No Man Has Gone Before”

It also comes with a special code to unlock the Wrath of Khan-era uniform for “Star Trek Online”, should you wish to pre-order the game.

  5. I have read many pages about people debating here at Amazon as to whether are not a review is valid before the product is officially released. I must say that a good number of reviews (that include product spec and contents) before the product comes out is very helpful to me so I can make a wise purchase. I do not intend on purchasing blu-rays to replace all my dvds; however, there are always exceptions to the rule and this set is one of them. The website listed below should be helpful to those deciding on whether or not to purchase. Of course, if your a Star Trek fan the price is right and it’s a “no brainer”.

Thanks to CBS/Paramount for readjusting the prices on all of the Star Trek DVDs / Blu-rays and making it afforable hopefully to most all Star Trek fans. I hope that the way these 3 seasons were done is a prelude to the way the other series will be released on blu-ray.

For those that are interested in wanting an early review of the product. Check the review for this set on “The Digital Bits” website. Today is December 2 and they have a detailed review. Today is December 4 and there is an excellant detailed blu-ray review of Season 3 on […] website.

I gave them 5 stars for the way the sets are presented and all of the extras that come with the set. There are a handful of indivudual stand out episodes in this season and I look forward to watching them on beautiful 1080p glory along with the masterful job they did with the audio. The fact that you can watch these shows in either the normal, enhanced, or both versions if one so chooses is another compliment to those resposible to brigning this set to Blu-ray. To borrow a quote “fascinating”.
