  2. Jane Wyman won an Oscar for her portrayal of a deaf-mute in a small Nova Scotian fishing village, who through the tutelage of a young doctor (played by Lew Ayres) learns how to sign – and shows she’s not as “dumb” as the townspeople think. Troubles really begin when the town bully (Stephen McNally) rapes her one night and she gets pregnant; everyone thinks Ayres is responsible. But then McNally comes back to Wyman to claim the baby, and she shoots and kills him. At the trial she is acquitted.

Everything works beautifully here. Wyman gives a superlative performance, not uttering a single sound the whole picture. The trial comes across a bit heavy-handed and forced, but Wyman’s performance and the excellent photography by Ted McCord (filmed along the north California coast) overcome this one fault. Definitely worth a watch.

  3. Leonard Maltin gave this one ***1/2 out of **** and said it was a great film. Haven’t seen it, but am prepared to buy it sight unseen because the story sounds interesting, it’s universally admired, Jean Negulesco was a versatile and talented director and Jane Wyman and Lew Ayres were both terrific performers. Trivia – Greta Garbo after her early retirement once named Ayres as her favourite male co-star (The Kiss, 1929), an obvious dismissal of John Gilbert!

  4. Full credit to Jayne Wyman for playing such a wonderful part so convincingly. Before I ever saw this movie I had only seen her in comedy. This movie shows the dramatic side. Wonderful movie to have in any collection of classics.

  5. I’m a lover of classic film. I love Lew Ayres and Jane Wyman. Long before Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson, this love story was unforgettable. The heart warming story of a love seen through the eyes and soul of a young woman who can’t hear or talk. How one person changes her world and brings a since of worth and diginty to her life. Grab a hankie.
