This film disgraces what the games have built. Final Fantasy looks like it is trying to copy the “Aliens” series with Sigourny Weaver. It has no traditional Final Fantasy story, and the guys who do the character designs (Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshitaka Amano) didn’t even do the character designs for the film! And the composer for the game (Nobuo Uematsu) didn’t do the music. The director of the game (Hironobu Sakaguchi) had little to do with the movie. It is like some team stole the title of a well respected video game series, slapped it on to a mediocre sci-fi thriller just so it can make a profit. Sure the video game series has gone on way too long and disgraced itself along the way, but the movie might as well kill it! Unfortunately the execs at Square are keeping the game series around because the games have gone so mainstream that everyone has played and owned a Final Fantasy game nowadays, and idiots will keep on buying the next ones that will come out (Hmm, next ones coming out are 10, 11, and 12, oh boy). Sure, I’ll see the movie opening day, I don’t think it is going to be good though. Hopefully the film suprises me, though I doubt it will.

Right now, I can’t say this movie is living up to my expectations. Based on the trailers I’ve seen and the plot backgrounds I’ve read, this is not Final Fantasy. While this movie looks ok in it’s own right, it does not have anything similar to the series other than it’s name. Yes, there IS an old man named Sid in this movie, but it doesn’t even use the REAL logo! While Final Fantasy is a series to explore new ground and never re-uses the same setting (other than keeping a few traditions, like Chocobo, for example), this looks like a totally sci-fi movie and appears to limit itself to science. However, this is just a first glance. This movie may live up to the legacy from which it is based and bring us another epic worthy of the title Final Fantasy. But so far, I’m saying that other than stunning CG and an ok sci-fi setting, I’m sadly not seeing another masterpiece

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within has NOTHING to do with the game of the same name, except the name and the creators. The “ghosts” idea is interesting, but that’s just about it.

The characters are pretty flat, and dialogue is quite boring. The characters also don’t react very…humanly to one another. I found the locations of the film to be beautiful, even the the characters don’t act…human. Oh, sure, their hair will wave, their lips and mouth move, and they spent some time rendering those eyelashes, but the movement of the people just doesn’t feel human. Also, I never really saw any emotion. I heard it in the voices, but the bodies onscreen never portrayed an emotion. The faces remained basically the same throughout the whole film.

The direction is mixed. I felt less like I was watching a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, what it was supposed to be, and more like I was watching a cutscene from a game.

In the end, Final Fantasy does present some pretty imagery, but the predictable story, the tiresome dialogue and the flat characters bring this movie down.

Well, with such a good cast of voice characters, I decided to give this “cartoon” a go. Big mistake. Considering I like sci-fi, the story is the worst boring hokey pokey ever. It also reeks of religious overtones. Yuck! It’s like a slow death. I found myself begging for it to end. Extremely painful. But if you want a quality cartoon, go see Toy Story and you’ll have more fun.

As soon as I started watching, and after realizing it takes place in New York city, which is in OUR world, I knew it would be bad. I was right. It isn’t an Anime, let alone Final Fantasy. It’s like a computer designed FX movie, which are all pointless and stupid alike. Final Fantasy is one of the greatest Anime series I’ve ever seen and this is nothing even remotely close. The graphics are probably the most realistic I have ever seen in anything on the planet and look real, but they don’t look like the awesome Japanimation I love and that Final Fantasy has. I doubt Squaresoft even oversaw the production of this movie, let alone MADE it, because this is NOT Final Fantasy in any way.
